Psycho-Oncology Services
When we talk about cancer treatment, you tend to think about surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. But there are further aspects to treatment that help heal the whole patient—mind and body. And that’s where psycho-oncology comes in.
Psycho-oncology is a field of practice that addresses the psychological, social, and behavioral aspects of cancer. It helps patients copy with the effects cancer can have on both their mental health and physical ability to fight the disease. It involves all stages of treatment—active, follow-up care, and remission—and includes caretakers and family in the process.
Our Psycho-oncology Clinic, which is part of the Cancer Treatment Center at Santa Clara Medical Center, is designed to help patients cope with their situation, to provide direct access to support care and services, and to empower patients with knowledge and resources to address long-term physical and lifestyle changes.
As part of our psycho-oncology services, mental health clinicians are available to provide short-term counseling, as well as to assist with accessing community and Kaiser Permanente-based resources. You can contact these clinicians directly at the numbers below to request an appointment.
We also have a licensed psychiatrist on staff Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. who can help with prescribing and monitoring psychiatric medications for adult patients. For more information, call Christy McCulloch, LCSW, at 408-851-8011.
