Brain Tumor

Adult brain tumors consist of several different types, with each type being treated differently. The most common adult brain tumor is called Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM).

There have been some significant advances in the treatment of brain tumors in the recent years.

Brain tumors are usually first detected by:

  • An abnormal x-ray finding.
  • Other symptoms suspicious of a brain tumor, such as seizure, headache, arm or leg weakness etc.

If a mass is seen on x-ray of the brain, you may be referred to the Department of Neurosurgery, Kaiser Permanente Redwood City for consideration of a biopsy.

Other tests, such as CT scans, PET scan and MRI may also be ordered.

Treatment options:

  • Surgery- removing as much of the tumor as possible, or biopsy only
  • Radiation therapy - external beam
  • Chemotherapy
