Urology

The Department of Urology at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara is located in the Medical Office Building on the Homestead Campus in Department 448, next to the oncology department.

Appointments in Urology are made by referral only.

Urology is a surgical specialty that deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate, urethra, testis, penis and scrotum. Urology covers diagnosis and treatment for both adults and children.

During your initial visit, an urologist will meet with you, review your history and perform a thorough exam.  Sometimes a procedure called cystoscopy may be performed to examine the bladder and ureters.

Digital rectal exam is frequently performed for patients suspected of or with known prostate cancer. These patients will often require biopsy of prostate to confirm the diagnosis of prostate cancer and understand the extent and aggressiveness of prostate cancer.

Patients with superficial invasive bladder cancer may receive a type of treatment called Intravesical Therapy, often using a drug solution called Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG). This is a type of immunotherapy. The solution is made from a weakened form of the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis (bacillus Calmette-Guérin) that does not cause disease but stimulates the body’s immune system. A catheter is used to place the BCG solution into the bladder where it is held for about two hours.

During your exam, a biopsy may be recommended and performed in the office.  If surgery is required a surgery scheduler in the department will help make the arrangements at a later date.

In addition, imaging studies and blood and urine tests may also be arranged as part of the workup.

If surgery is part of the treatment for a urologic cancer, this may be arranged with the urologist and his/her colleagues.  All of the urologists at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara have spent years of training in this specialty, and are committed to collaborating closely together and with colleagues in other departments to provide the best care possible for the treatment of your cancer.

During and after completion of cancer treatment, there will be regular, frequent follow up appointments arranged in the department with the urologist involved in the care.

Patients are encouraged to include family member and friends at their visits in the Department of Urology.
