Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery is the oldest medical specialty in the United States. Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgeons are physicians trained in the medical and surgical management and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the ear, nose, throat (ENT), and related structures of the head and neck. They are commonly referred to as ENT physicians. Their special skills include diagnosing and managing cancers and tumors of the sinuses, larynx (voice box), oral cavity, and upper pharynx (mouth and throat), as well as structures of the neck and face.
During your initial visit, a head and neck surgeon will meet with you, review your history and perform a thorough head and neck examination. This will often include a minimally invasive procedure in the office called an indirect laryngoscopy where an instrument is used, called a flexible fiberoptic
Nasopharyngoscope. This instrument is equipped with a thin tube fitted with an eyepiece, lenses, and its own light source to allow an examination through the nose, back of the nose, upper throat, and voicebox areas.
Patients are encouraged to include family member and friends at their visits in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery.
During your exam, a biopsy may be recommended and sometimes this can be done in the office. However, in most cases, a biopsy and more detailed exam will need to be arranged for the operating room under general anesthesia. A surgery scheduler in the department will help make the arrangements for the biopsy to be done at a later date.
In addition to the head and neck exam, imaging studies and blood tests may also be arranged as part of the workup before going to the operating room.
If surgery is part of the treatment for the head and neck cancer, this will be arranged with the head and neck surgeon and his/her colleagues. All of the Head and Neck Surgeons at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara have spent up to 15 years of training in this specialty, and are committed to collaborating closely together and with colleagues in other departments to provide the best care possible for those with head and neck cancer.
During and after completion of head and neck cancer treatment, there will be regular, frequent follow up appointments arranged in the Head and Neck Surgery department with the surgeon involved in the care.
