Maxillofacial Surgery
Hello and welcome to our site. The Division of Maxillofacial Surgery at Kaiser Permanente provides comprehensive services in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions affecting the oral cavity, jaws, and facial region. As members of the Head and Neck Cancer Team, we provide additional surgical services including removal of jaw tumors, reconstruction of the jaws following tumor surgery, and minor oral surgery such as routine dental extractions prior to cancer therapy.
Dental Care and Oral Cancer Treatment
Dental care is an important part of the treatment for oral cancer. If you've been diagnosed with oral cancer, you should know that dental problems such as gum disease, cavities, and poorly fitting dentures can get worse during your oral cancer treatment. Moreover, complications from cancer treatment may make it difficult to treat existing dental conditions once cancer therapy has started.
Extractions and minor oral surgery make up only a small part of a patient’s overall oral health care. Our mission as maxillofacial surgeons is to ensure that all aspects of your oral health are addressed. We work closely with your general dentist to formulate a comprehensive dental treatment plan to meet your oral health care needs. In addition to extractions, such dental services may include fillings, crown and bridge work, cleanings, root canals, and fluoride treatments. The goal of comprehensive dental care is to restore the oral cavity to optimal health before cancer treatment begins, and to institute an oral health regimen that can be followed before, during, and after cancer treatment.
We recommend that you see your general dentist before starting cancer treatment. If you do not have a dentist, we will be more than happy to assist you in finding one that will take care of all your dental needs.
