Cervical cancer screening and prevention
According to the American Cancer Society, cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in the United States. Each year, almost 12,000 women are told that they have the disease.
Cervical cancer starts with changes that happen before cancer develops, and is related to sexual activities that can transmit a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV vaccines can protect you from the types of HPV that cause cervical cancer, especially if given before you become sexually active.
However, the best way to stop cervical cancer is to find and treat pre-cancer. A Pap test can find changes in cervical cells before they turn into cancer. And catching these pre-cancerous cells early is the best way to prevent and treat cervical cancer.
