Weight management

Research shows that obesity increases the risk of certain cancers:

  • Breast cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Endometrium cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Possibly cancer of pancreas and gallbladder as well.
Weight control

Weight control is very important for cancer survivors:

  • increasing physical activities
  • Watching your weight
  • controlling calorie intake
  • obesity is associated with increased mortality

Not only does weight control improve quality of life, it also lowers the risk of developing other medical illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

Overweight and obesity is associated with higher risk of breast cancer and recurrence. Many research studies have shown that obesity is associated with increased risk of death related to a number of diseases including cancer.

Menopause

Overweight/obesity can be a particular risk for women who become postmenopausal prematurely because of chemotherapy.

  • Menopause, decreased hormone production, and hormone suppressing medications can lead to weight gain
  • physically inactivity causes weight gain
  • Fat tissue contributes most of the circulating estrogen in post-menopausal women
  • Obesity/overweight can cause joint problems or exacerbate osteoarthritis and lead to inability for prolonged physical activities and hence a sedentary lifestyle
Hormonal therapy in men

Obesity/overweight can also be a risk for men who receive hormonal therapy for prostate cancer and lead to reduced physical activities.

Regular physical activity is critical to weight management success.
