Dietary fiber

It was initially thought that increased fiber consumption would reduce cancer of colon and rectum. But this association has been difficult to establish. Many observational studies have not shown consistent results and no conclusion can be drawn to corroborate a protection of fiber intake.

Despite lack of evidence, good amount of fresh vegetables is recommended to be a part of healthy diet. A good amount of whole grain foods daily is also advised.

Fiber intake may help reduce constipation. But in patients with history of bowel obstruction, taking large quantity of fiber may not be advised.
