Breast cancer and aspirin

A recent observational study based on responses from 4,164 female registered nurses in the Nurses' Health Study showed that women with breast cancer who also took aspirin had better survival compared to women with breast cancer not taking aspirin.

  • However, this does not mean we know for sure that aspirin can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence and increase survival.
  • Since this was an “observational study”, caution needs to be taken in interpreting the result.
  • In addition, aspirin is associated with other side effects including bleeding, stomach ulcer, kidney failure and others.

Other studies related to aspirin and breast cancer prevention were not conclusive. In one study, it was thought that aspirin might have protective benefit in patients with hormone-sensitive breast cancer.
