Cancer prediction tools

Doctor, what are my chances?”
This is a common question from many patients diagnosed with cancer.
Some patients with early stage cancer are cured with surgery alone, but some may require chemotherapy or other treatment. It is nearly impossible to tell if a patient is cured or not.

However, there are many tools physicians and patients can use to get a sense of their “chances”. These tools can help estimate the risk of cancer relapse, the risk of lymph node involvement by cancer, the risk of dying from cancer, or how much benefit a patient can get from receiving a chemotherapy or hormonal therapy.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) has developed a number of these tools for cancer patients, covering several cancer types. The tools can help physicians as well as patients when making decisions about treatment.

These prediction tools use a patient’s age, physical condition, characteristics of the cancer, extent of the cancer, as well as other information to give an estimated rate of risk or benefit from treatment.
