Colon cancer follow-up
Adapted from NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network) V.2.2010
- History and physical exam:
- every 3-6 months for 2 years
- then every 6 months for a total of 5 years
- CEA blood test:
- every 3-6 months for 2 years
- then every 6 months for a total of 5 years for disease that has penetrated muscularis layer and beyond.
- X-ray: Chest/abdominal/pelvic CT annually x 3 years for patients at high risk for recurrence
- Colonoscopy in 1 year
- except if no preoperative colonoscopy due to obstructing lesion: then colonscopy in 3-6 months
- If advanced adenoma: repeat in 1 year
- If no advanced adenoma:
- repeat in 3 years
- then every 5 years
